The Long Coated gene appeared in 1972. [1] It is a recessive gene and is the Second Coat Length Modifying gene and, unlike what many people think, appeared after the 2 Coat Texture Modifiers; Rex & Satin, which appeared 2 years and 5 years before, respectively. [2]
In well bred individuals, most notably those in the United Kingdom, the length of coat in Male Hamsters can reach up to 4 inches (10cm) in Length [1]
In females the coat length is comparably shorter than in Male Hamsters and can almost not noticable unless you compare them to a Short Coated Hamster. They appear to be a lot more "poofier" for lack of a scientific term.
